Membership of the Magog Trust

The MAGOG TRUST is a continuing success story - a remarkable story of the English countryside. The Magog Down lies within the Gog Magog hills to the south of Cambridge which, in earlier times, served our ancestors as a vital defensive position. This is just as important now as an escape from the pressures of urban life, a home for wildlife, and a place for informal recreation and conservation, with a Car Park, Disabled Access, and a Perimeter Walk developed especially for dog walkers.

The Magog Trust is a Registered Charity (No. 802150), a Company limited by Guarantee (No. 2426534) and has now achieved its main objectives; the Governors invite you to become a member. Membership brings no privileges of use of the Down for, as part of its charitable status, is freely available to all. Members may vote at open meetings; become involved in the continuing development and promotion of the Downland; and receive Newsletters with information about activities.

The MAGOG TRUST HISTORY

The Magog Down, an area of chalk downland extending to 163.5 acres, was purchased in 1989 and is owned by the Magog Trust, a registered charity and a Company limited by guarantee. The Trust and the Down are managed and run by the Governors of the Trust, with support from members and volunteers, to provide facilities for recreation and other leisure time occupations, and the conservation, protection and restoration of the countryside in Cambridge. The Downland nurtures 24,000 trees and many species of flowers, grasses, and abundant wildlife such as small mammals, ground nesting birds, butterflies, moths and insects. It is a spectacular stretch of England's rarest landscape restored to its former beauty. The meadows are wonderful for a gentle stroll, the 2.5 mile fenced perimeter walk is purpose made for off-lead dog walking and seats around both the north and south meadows provide rest and views. The Trust has over 500 members supporting and contributing to:

  • the creation of meadows and woods
  • the restoration of the chalk downland pasture
  • providing a 2.5 mile fenced perimeter walk
  • the cost of the 134 space car park
  • provision of disabled access
  • repayment of the debt incurred in the land purchase
  • annual maintenance costs in excess of £14,000
