Weed control, tree works and stump grinding |
|||
| The following work is being done in order to protect the
archaeology for the future and to allow the surface of the Bowl Barrow to be
returned to a grass sward as soon as possible. Work will start this month to control the weeds on the surface of the Bowl Barrow with the application of herbicide. This will leave the surface vegetation, which consists mostly of coarse weeds such as nettle, thistle and burdock, dead and brown. This will be followed by machinery grinding the stumps of the trees removed last year to surface level. Remedial work will be carried out on trees behind the Bowl Barrow. A dying beech will be reduced to a monolith as a future habitat for birds, insects and fungi. Another, where soil erosion around the roots has occurred will have the crown reduced to minimise risk of windthrow. For the same reason ivy control on several sycamores will be done early in 2009. The more vulnerable trees will be reduced to high stumps or removed. All work is being carried out under licence from English Heritage and Natural England Wildlife Licensing Unit. |
